Actors That Love Working with Tim Burton

Known for making films about characters who are quite simply “different”, Tim Burton is one of the most famous and bizarre filmmakers working today. His films often share a variety of the same ensemble actors. So, who does Tim Burton work with the most?

Johnny Depp – 8 Films
The actor with the most Tim Burton credits in his filmography, is at time rising star Johnny Depp, having first appeared the character of the same name in 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, where he played one of the most unique characters of his career, just below Jack Sparrow in my opinion. They went on to collaborate together on seven other films. The last one, Alice in Wonderland, came out in 2012. A 2016 sequel, also starring Depp was made, though it wasn’t directed by Burton.

Helena Bonham Carter – 7 Films
Though possibly most known for her role as Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter movies, Bonham Carter has also appeared in a string of Tim Burton movies. Most of which also star Johnny Depp, the only exception being 2001’s Planet of the Apes reboot.

Christopher Lee – 6 Films
The Nazi hunter turned legendary actor first appeared in Sleepy Hollow, alongside Depp, Bonham Carter and even to be Star Wars costar Ian McDiarmid ( Chancellor Palpatine ). He’s since appeared in mostly very small, yet memorable roles in most of Burton’s films. This was until his unfortunate passing at the age of 93 in 2015.

Michael Keaton – 4 Films
The legendary actor first appeared as Beetlejuice in 1988. This film along with Batman, which came out a year later. Launched the two into stardom. The two would have most likely made another two films together, what we know as ‘Batman Forever’ and ‘Batman & Robin’. Though due to creative differences with Warner Bros., neither wanted to continue the Batman streak. After Batman, Keaton took a 20 year break from Burton movies, returning for a voice over in 2012’s Frankenweenie, and for the 2019 live action remake of Dumbo.

Danny DeVito – 4 Films
Philadelphia star Danny DeVito has been in his fair share of Tim Burton films. His first Burton role was the sinister Batman villain Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot, who’s now going to be played by Colin Ferrell in the 2021 Robert Pattinson reboot.
Appeared in: Batman Returns, Mars Attacks!, Big Fish, Dumbo

Lisa Marie – 4 Films
Admittadly, I didn’t know this actress until seeing her names on the cast lists. Lisa Marie first appeard in Ed Wood, being a regular of Tim Burton up until 2001, in Planet of the Apes. She hasn’t appeared in a Burton movies since. On a side note, according to ImdB she hasn’t acted since 2015 and she’s still alive. So it’s very possible she has retired from acting. Beforehand, she took an 11 year acting break, meaning her return was likely more experimental then anything else.

Winona Ryder – 3 Films
Ryder originally appeared as a young actress in Beetlejuice, where she played ‘Lydia’. Following that films sucess, she also appeared in Edward Scissorhands. It took another 22 years for the actress-director duo to colab again. She played Elsa Van Helsing in 2012’s Frankenweenie.
